Extended 3 – 12 month prescriptions
Prescription lengths will only be changed during a medication review appointment with your prescriber (not on repeat requests).
Prescriptions can now be >3 months for many medications. This will mean that most patients will no longer request prescriptions without being seen.
At your next medication review appointment, your prescriber will discuss how frequently your health conditions & medications need to be reviewed, and prescribe enough to last until your next review.
Reviewing long term conditions and medications takes a full appointment to do safely – if you have other issues you’ll be asked to book a separate appointment.
Bridging prescription – When you can’t attend a review appointment before running out of medication:
- Bridging prescriptions can be requested on the form below or through our patient portal.
- We prioritise getting these completed by the next working day.
- If safe to do so, your prescriber will provide a prescription of between 1 – 4 weeks of medication at the prescriber’s discretion. It may not be available for all circumstances.
- You need to book an appointment for medication review.

Prescribing policy:
Our prescribing policy is based the Medical Council of New Zealand’s Good Prescribing Practice guidance.
- Controlled/addictive medicines will not be started / increased for any new patients
- All prescriptions & repeats are at the discretion of the prescriber
- Medication review requires a full standard appointment for safety reasons – please don’t expect to cover other issues
- Medication review appointments are always required (repeats not offered) for:
- Medications that are new or recently changed, prescribed elsewhere, controlled or addictive medicines
- Extended (4-12 month) prescriptions
- Patients with two or more complex health conditions
- At the prescriber’s request
- Review appointments may be done 6-monthly for other stable situations if the prescriber agrees. This is the maximum for the majority of medications
- A small number of low risk medications / conditions can at times have review appointments done 12-monthly. No prescriptions can be done for patients that have not been seen in the last 12 months
